चैत्र नवरात्रि के चौथे दिन माता कूष्माण्डा की पूजा होती है। देवी कूष्माण्डा को देवी भागवत् पुराण में आदिशक्ति के रुप में बताया गया है। मां कूष्माण्डा की उपासना से भक्तों के कई तरह के रोग मिट जाते हैं। मां की उपासना से आयु, यश और बल बढ़ता है। देवी कूष्मांडा की आठ भुजाएं हैं इसलिए यह अष्टभुजा देवी भी कहलाती हैं।
माता अपने हाथों में कमंडल, धनुष, बाण, कमल पुष्प, अमृत से भरा कलश, गदा, चक्र और जपमाला धारण करती हैं। मां कुष्मांडा का वाहन सिंह है। ऐसी मान्यता है मंद मुस्कान से ब्रह्मांड को उत्पन्न करने के कारण इनका नाम कूष्मांडा पड़ा। जब सृष्टि का कोई नामो निशान नहीं था तब देवी ने ब्रह्मांड की रचना की थी।
देवी पुराण में बताया गया है कि सृष्टि के आरंभ से पहले अंधकार का साम्राज्य था। उस समय आदि शक्ति जगदम्बा देवी कूष्मांडा के रुप में वनस्पतियों एवं सृष्टि की रचना के लिए जरूरी चीजों को संभालकर सूर्य मण्डल के बीच में विराजमान हो गई थी। नवरात्रि के चौथे दिन बड़े माथे वाली विवाहित महिला का पूजन करना चाहिए। माता को फल, मेवे और सौभाग्य का सामान भेंट करना चाहिए।
मां कूष्मांडा की कृपा पाने के लिए नवरात्रि के चौथे दिन इस मंत्र का जाप करना चाहिए।
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मां कूष्माण्डा रूपेण संस्थिता।
