चैत्र नवरात्रि के पांचवे दिन मां दुर्गा के नौ रूपों में से एक रूप स्कंदमाता की पूजा की जाती है। स्कंदमाता की चार भुजाएं हैं। माता अपने दो हाथों में कमल पुष्प धारण किए हुए है और एक हाथ से कुमार कार्तिकेय को गोद लिए हुए हैं। संतान सुख की इच्छा से जो व्यक्ति मां स्कंदमाता की आराधना करते हैं उन्हें संतान प्राप्ति होती है।
इस नवरात्र की पांचवी तिथि को लाल वस्त्र में सुहाग चिन्ह सिंदूर, लाल चूड़ी, महावर, लाल बिन्दी तथा सेब और लाल फूल एवं चावल बांधकर मां की गोद भरनी चाहिए। एक बार इन्द्र ने कार्तिकेय का उपहास उड़ाना शुरू किया और बताया कि आप भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती की संतान नहीं हैं।
इस बात को लेकर कुमार कार्तिकेय बहुत दुःखी हुए। माता ने कार्तिकेय का दुख समझ लिया और सिंह पर सवार होकर प्रकट हो गई। फिर मां ने अपनी गोद में कार्तिकेय को उठाकर दुलार किया। माता को खुश करने के लिए पंचमी तिथि को पांच साल की पांच कन्याओं एवं पांच बालकों को खीर एवं मिठाई खिलाएं।
तत्पश्चात कन्याओं को लाल चुनरी एवं ५ रुपये दें तथा बालकों को एक सेब एवं ५ रुपये दें। माँ जगदम्बे की भक्ति पाने के लिए नवरात्रि में पाँचवें दिन इस मंत्र जाप करना चाहिए।
